While I worked at Landmark Publishing (the parent company of The Virginian-Pilot, and the firm which published The Flagship Military Newspaper), I freelanced for the Norfolk Nighthawks. The Nighthawks were an arena football franchise, which played their games at the Norfolk Scope. This was very convenient for me, because I could take my lunch break and walk across the street to the Scope to meet with the ownership.
The Nighthawks were part of the af2, which was a developmental league, developed by the “big” Arena Football League. Both of these leagues have folded, and the Nighthawks franchise existed from 2000-03. The team was co-owned by NFL Hall of Famers, Bruce Smith and Kenny Easley.
